Cheating
Let’s get this straight, cheating at brag happens, it will always happen and in fact playing the game on-line will be a lot safer than in the pub.(which is also illegal so stop it) There isn’t the same atmosphere but no one can cheat as no one touches the cards or sees anything untoward.
This is NOT a guide on how to cheat. It’s a guide on how to spot someone who is cheating and how to make sure that the game you play is played fairly.
1: Wow i’ve got 3 of a kind…. BLIND AGAIN!
If someone is betting blind, keep a close eye. It’s very easy to miss someone who has already looked at their cards declare they are blind. Don’t even look at your cards until you have watched everyone else. To keep things friendly mention that you noticed them look each time they do i.e. “looking already chicken shit”
Sound’s stupid but if you stand back and watch a game of brag in the pub it happens almost every time, someone who’s seen their great hand is betting blind!
2: The mate at the bar
Never sit with your back towards people, it’s common to see a friend of a rival player behind your shoulder giving the odd wink. unfair advantages and collusion are not on. but will and do happen.
3: The pretend bets
Easy to do but hard to spot. if everyone was betting £2 a time that’s a lot of pound coins hitting the pot. Watch for the clever arse who picks up 2 and only throws one. the sound is the same as it hits the others and it is very difficult to see if they have had practice!
Also works with betting 5 and throwing 2 etc.
4: Counting the cards.
It’s not difficult at all this. I was shown this by an old time card player when i was about 15. it was one of the most profitable lessons i have ever learned. Yes i did cheat using this if you can call it cheating that is. It wasn’t really my fault it was just there to see!
Before i explain here’s the easiest way to stop it happening:
Never EVER turn the deck face side up, people often do this to make stacking or folding their cards to the bottom easier. it’s an invitation to cheat for me and many others.
How they do it.
To know what cards are coming out in brag is easy and requires little brain power, it works when there are either 3 or 6 players at the table. It’s important that the deal is kept right and each players deals in turn.
Best way to pick this up is to see for yourself so grab a pack of cards now!
Deal 3 hands and turn the pack face up.
Now look at each hand and fold them in turn, remember which card was face up from each hand that you folded. i.e. Player 1 had : 10 - 9 - 7 and the 7 was showing on the deck. Player 2 had 7 - 2 - K and the 7 was showing on the deck when folded. Player 3 had 6 - ace - 8 and the ace was showing on the deck when folded.
Now remember the pack never gets shuffled in brag unless a prial comes out (3 of a kind) so carry on playing and dealing but remember who dealt when you saw the cards get folded!
Play another 6 hands and on the 6th deal the same person is dealing as when you saw the cards. look what the player to the left of the dealer has K - 7 - 7. Easy as that.
Also watch for people messing and looking at the cards when it’s their deal. If they look and mess with the folded cards before putting them to the bottom of the deck they could well be setting up a hand for themselves in 6 hands time!
Doing it with 6 players is a little harder but still easy, try and figure that out for yourself. If you can’t email me and i’ll explain it.
